About Shoto-Shinkai Karate-Do

We wish to first acknowledge our roots and pay our respects to those who came before us in the Way. Master Gichin Funakoshi, for whom Shotokan Karate-do was named, brought to Japan the "Original Karate" of Master Anko Itosu, of Okinawa. This was the Educational or P.E. Karate, which was derived from Te or Tode. Much of our most recent information comes from Hiroshi Kinjo (1919- ), one of Okinawa's last living Legends, via one of his students, Kazuya Mitani Sensei of the Seitokukai. We also wish to thank Alfredo T. Sanchez (Web Designer) for his untiring efforts in maintaining this website.

Within the Zen Beikoku Shoto-Shinkai training syllabus we study all aspects of the art of Karate, to include Karate-Do and Karate-Jutsu. This includes the study of Kihon Waza, Kata, Kumite, Atemi Waza, Kansetsu Waza, Nage Waza, Ne Waza, Ukemi Waza, and the study of Aiki-jutsu Waza. Shoto-Shinkai Karate is not at heart, a sport style of Karate. We do however support the belief that there are two sides to Karate, and to this end we maintain membership in the USA-National Karate-Do Federation, which is the Olympic Governing Body for Karate in America. Our main goal however, is to develop self defense skill sets, based on the information passed down historically from the Okinawan Te systems. These skill sets are based on the following principles: 1) Uke Waza or "Receiving" techniques which include entering, parrying, shifting, blocking, evading, jamming, etc. 2) Atemi Waza or "Vital point striking" used to instantly stun and/or immobilize your opponent. 3) Nage Waza or techniques of "throwing" or "downing" your opponent. 4) Finishing techniques are determined by the situation itself, and the techniques used could be from any Waza of the Training Syllabus.

The Founder of the American Shoto-Shinkai Karate-Do Federation or ASKDF is Professor Eugene "Pete" Rouse, Hachidan, 8th Degree Black Belt. Professor Rouse originally founded the Shoto-Shinkai Karate Dojo's along with Sensei Bud Morgan, Go Dan, 5th degree Black Belt, in the Fall of 1994, as the United States Shotoshinkai Karate Association. Professor Rouse is currently employed by the Pulaski County Sheriff's Office Detention Facility in Little Rock, Arkansas. He is currently assigned as the Special Response Team Commander, and the Defensive Tactics Instructor for the Department. Professor Rouse counts many distinguished martial arts teachers both in the past and present who continue to "teach" him, and he readily states , "We are always to be students of Karate". Some of those who have assisted him along the way are, Sensei Cedric "Bull" Rodgers (Shotokan), Sensei Don Davis (Shotokan), Master Kang Rhee (Pasa-Ryu), Sensei Bill Brown and Sensei Gary Reifiess (Matsumura Orthodox Shorin Ryu), Grand Master Fuse Kise (Matsumura Orthodox Shorin Ryu), Grand Master Moses Powell (Sanuces Ryu Jujitsu), Grand Master Philip Chenique (Atemi Ryu Jujitsu), Grand Master Lioni Velazquez (Atemi Ryu Jujitsu), and Professor Roger Braswell (Atemi Ryu Jujitsu).

Sensei Bud Morgan founded the Zen Beikoku Shoto-Shinkai Karate Dojo (School) in August of 2002, as a branch of the National Governing Body of the ASKDF. Sensei Morgan is a Retired Deputy Sheriff and Law Enforcement Defensive Tactics Instructor, who is living in Fayetteville, North Carolina, and currently works in Sales Management. Sensei Morgan began his Martial Arts studies in Judo under two dynamic teachers, Sensei Ron Powell and Sensei Akira Tachibana both students of the Kodokan in Japan. He then began a nineteen year study of Korean Karate, studying Moo Duk Kwan, Chung Do Kwan, Song Ahm Kwan, and Ki Do Kwan, under some very outstanding teachers including, Phinus Shellnut, See Chong Lee, Kyung Te Pak, Jon Petry, Jee Ho Lee, Dwayne Hodges, and Raymond Walters. Sensei Morgan also trained under "Little John" Agoun of Guam (Shaolin Five Animals Kung Fu and Shojukai Kempo) while stationed with the U.S. Army's 82nd Airborne Division, and Sensei Bill Brown (Matsumura Orthodox Shorin Ryu). In 1992 he began a conversion over to Japanese Shotokan Karate under Professor Rouse, and from that beginning Shoto-Shinkai Karate emerged. Sensei Morgan continues to train with the Sanuces Ryu and Atemi Ryu Jujitsu Masters listed above, and maintains membership within the International Seito Karate Kenkyukai, The International Society of Okinawan/Japanese Karate Do (ISOK), the USA National Karate Federation (Olympic Governing Body), and the American Shoto-Shinkai Karate-Do Federation. Sensei Morgan also travels to Japan to meet with his wife's uncle Takashi Takeda, a Judo Waza expert and former student of Mifune Kyuzo (Kodokan Judo's last 10th Dan), as well as Mitani Kazuya Sensei, President of the Okinawa Seito Karate Do Seitokukai in Chiba, Japan.
